Water Mist Sprinkler Systems

A water mist system is a fire protection system using very fine water sprays, i.e. ‘water mist’ to suppress or extinguish fires. Although the benefits of smaller water droplets have been known since the 1930s, it was not until the early 1990s that systems entered the market.

Ultramist are pleased to announce that their 'Low Flow' water mist systems are suitable for all types of premises including domestic and residential properties where they provide a cost effective solution to providing 24 hour protection for your property, family and tenants.

‘Low Flow' water mist systems are almost identical in installation to a sprinkler system, however in operation they discharge much smaller quantities of water and as a result is used much more effectively.

Misting produces micron size water droplets that are more effective in extinguishing fires than traditional sprinkler system droplets. Dividing water into smaller droplets increases its surface area and consequently, the rate at which it absorbs heat also increases. This causes the fire zone to become cooler sooner.

A second, extinguishing effect occurs when very small droplets absorb enough energy to convert to steam, expanding over 1600 times and driving air from the fire, starving the fire of its vital oxygen. Less water is needed to control a fire and as such the potential for water damage is greatly reduced.

This ‘user friendly’ system is the equivalent of a firefighter in every room waiting to extinguish any fire at source even during ‘power cuts’ or if ‘water shortages’ should occur.

Mist droplets expose more surface area to fire and heat than conventional sprinkler systems and thereby enable faster extinction, another reason why they are more suitable for domestic & residential properties.

Text Box: Sprinkler Flow Rates

Domestic Property:

It should be designed in a way that if 2 sprinkler heads activate they would be fed with a minimum of 42ltrs of water per minute, for a minimum duration of 10 minutes.

Residential Property:

It should be designed in a way that if 4 sprinkler heads activate they would be fed with a minimum of 42ltrs of water per minute, for a minimum duration of 30 minutes.
